Ahead of Republic Day 2020, Ministry of Home Affairs issued the list of this year’s Padma award winners on Saturday, 25th of January. And, this time Jharkhand hails the names of two of its artists namely Guru Shashadhar Acharya and Madhu Mansuri Hasmukh for being honoured with the Padma Shri – the fourth highest civilian award.
Madhu Mansuri Hasmukh
Madhu Mansuri Hansmukh was born on 4 September 1948 in Ratu Simlia, near Ranchi and worked at MECON. After his retirement, he devoted his entire life to promoting Nagpuri language, art, and culture. Madhu also turned to music and has been singing Nagpuri songs for more than 50 years. His songs mostly narrate the civilization and culture of Jharkhand, and the mysteries of nature, which mostly speak of folk tradition. His compositions became popular during the 90s, which also helped fan the Jharkhand state movement. The most famous among them was the song ‘Nagpur kar kora’. His songs mostly showcased revolution, with emotions like pain and grief.
Guru Shashadhar Acharya
Guru Shashdhar Acharya is a well-known Chhau dancer, teacher, and the director of Acharya Chhau Nrutya. Shashadhar has been enlisted amongst the Padma Shri winners of 2020. He had been keenly interested in the dance form of Chhau since his childhood days. His father Late Guru Lingaraj Acharya was also a Chhau Guru and Shashadhar like his three younger brothers inherited this art from him. Acting as the director of the Government Chhau Dance Center in Saraikela from 1990 to 1992, Shashidhar received the Sangeet Nayak Award in 2004 for his contribution to the field. He is also a visiting professor at the National School of Drama and teaches Chhau to his students both in Saraikela as well as in New Delhi.
